Here are some safety tips from the
Health and Physical Education Department that will save lives.
1. Safety belts are your best
defense against death and serious injury in a traffic crash. You are
twice as likely to die or sustain serious injury in a crash if you're unbelted.
2. 59% of the teens killed in Va. crashes in 2008 were not wearing safety belts.
That is 67 teens that may be alive today if they had worn their seat
belts.
3. 8 teen's lives could have been saved in the tidewater area in 2009, if they
had worn their seat belts.
4. When buckled, your odds of being ejected in a crash are greatly reduced.
Only 1% of restrained occupants get ejected in a crash compared to 30% of
unrestrained occupants.
5. When worn correct, seat belts are about 50% effective in saving your life.
6. Remember to wear your seat belt correct. The shoulder harness should
fit snugly across the collarbone and chest - not the neck or face. The
lab belt should also fit snugly across your hips - not ride up on your stomach.
