 |
It's that time again NTC High School Visitation Week. This educational experience provides NPS high school students with an opportunity to visit the facility and learn about career and technical programs available to them in grades 10 through 12. On the day of their fieldtrip to NTC, high school students are given an individualized schedule with courses that they pre-selected. Visiting students have an opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, meet NTC instructors, and talk to CTE students. Information about career and technical education training opportunities, co-curricular clubs, industry-wide certification and licensure preparation, diploma requirements and community college course offerings are disseminated.
Starting in February 2010, NTC instructors will visit all 10th grade Health & P.E. classes at each of the five Norfolk public high schools prior to each school’s scheduled visitation day.
Dates NTC Instructors will be at NPS High School HPE10 classes:
Lake Taylor High School 2/9/10 & 2/10/10
Maury High School 2/16/10 & 2/17/10

Granby High School 2/22/10 & 2/23/10

Maury's Medical and Health Specialities Program |

Sparked by the realization that a career in the health field could lead to more professions than that of a physician, Maury freshman students in the Medical and Health Specialties Program (MHSP) took a Fieldtrip on december 1st to Norfolk Technical Center hosted by NTC HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America, co-curricular student organization) to learned about NTC Career and Technical health-related career pathways.
In small tour groups let by student HOSA ambassadors, MHSP students visited 4 of 5 classes including Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technician, Dental Technician, Medical Assistant and/or Fire Fighting/Emergency Medical Technician. Each encounter led them to a course related activity, student and teacher discussions and career related demonstrations. This is the first such collaboration between the two schools in regard to their health specialties programs. Current NTC students demonstrated skills they had learned and applied actual techniques on the Maury students by testing each students BMI (Body Mass Index), CPR on mannequins (accompanied by the rhythmic disco beat of “Staying Alive”) and how to prepare temporary fillings. One constant question posed at each session was “How much can you make?” and “What does it cost to take this program?”. Students were amazed to learn about the earning potential of industry certified workers and then doubly amazed to learn they could acquire these skills as part of their high school education. “It costs about $28,000 to become a licensed practical nurse through a 2-year program after high school,” shared the instructor, Robin Ward. Ms. Stokes stated that a Pharmacy Technician Program would cost about $22,000 if taken through a technical college. Anne Christie, Maury High School Counselor, expressed "It’s all about the options, and the faculty of the Norfolk Technical Center helped to broaden the view and possibilities of these 9th grade students in 2 short hours!" |
